New WPS Membership Development Initiative
It is our pleasure to inform you that your WPS Assembly delegation- Roger Peele, Catherine May, and I- secured a $5000.00 grant for our Society to start a membership development initiative through a series of workshops on  Developing your career, enhancing your leadership skills.

 The series, designed for Residents and early career psychiatrists will be launched in January 2008 and run through June. Residents from GWU, Georgetown, Howard, ST.Eze. USUHS, Hopkins and Maryland will be invited. The planning committee will have its first meeting in early October. If you have ideas and/or wish to participate in this pioneering initiative, please let us know. Many thanks.

WHO/PAHO Conference, From Alma-Ata to the Millenium Development Goals
Eliot Sorel, M.D., D.L.F.A.P.A., Clinical Professor of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences in the GWU School of Medicine and of Global Health, Health Services Management and Leadership, in the School of Public Health and Health Services, participated as a Pan American Health Organization Advisor in the WHO/PAHO Conference, From Alma-Ata to the Millenium Development Goals, in Buenos Aires, Argentina, 13-17, August devoted to developing equity based, comprehensive health care systems. The conference, attended by health ministers and deputy health ministers from sixty countries, as well as civil society, other policy makers, the academic and private sectors, was held at the Foreign Ministry of Argentina and adopted the Buenos Aires Declaration stating the principles and agreements of equity based, comprehensive health care systems.

FDA extends Black Box Warning on Antidepressants –Psychiatrists/Patients Oppose

WPS Members Speak Out Against Black Box Warning for Antidepressants
On December 13 the U.S. Food and Drug Administration held hearings on its proposal to place a black box warning on antidepressants for adults indicating that these medications increase the likelihood of suicidal thoughts. Roger Peele, MD and Louis Kopolow, MD testified against placing such a warning on antidepressants. Each testified had three minutes to present. Following are the testimonies of Drs. Peele and Kopolow.

XIX World Congress of Social Psychiatry
Eliot Sorel, M.D., D.L.F.A.P.A., Executive Committee menber of the XIX World Congress of Social Psychiatry, A Changing World: Challenges for Society and for Social Psychiatry, cordially invites all our colleagues to submit papers, symposia, and workshop proposals by contacting the Congress Secretariat at www.wasp2007.cz. The XIX World Congress of Social Psychiatry will take place in Prague, the Czech Republic, October 21-24, 2007.

District of Columbia PGY I & II meeting
The first District of Columbia PGY I & II meeting took place under the aegis of the Cosmos Club Health Group, on September 29th at the Club with excellent and enthusiastic participation of PGY I & II from GWU, Howard, Georgetwon and St. Eze. The participants also included Doctors Ray Scallettar, former Chairman of the Board of the AMA, Annelle Primm, Director of Minority and National Affairs of the APA, William B. Lawson, Chairman, Department of Psychiatry, Howard University College of Medicine, Jeff Akman, Chairman Department of Psychiatry, GW, Connie Dunlap, President, DC Psychiatric Society, and Eliot Sorel, Chairman of the Cosmos Club Health Group and the meeting's convener. The Residents expressed a very keen interest in continuing and building on this event, a very keen wish to learn more about each other's programs, and to get involved with the DC professional community. In addition to the very good time had by all, one other concrete outcome from the meeting may be a Transcultural Psychiatry Conference, next spring in Washington, D.C. with broad institutional participation and representation in the planning of the event. Dr. Sorel also presented special thanks to Dr. Maryam Razavi, Chief Resident at GW, for her important contributions in assisting with preparation of this pioneering and very successful event.

APA Global Disaster Conference
The APA/WPA Transectional Symposium "Global Disasters: Psychiatric Medicine and Public Health Challenges" received extensive and laudatory coverage in the August 24, 2005 issue of the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA 2005;294: 889-890). The Carter Center program, a first at the APA Annual Meeting, was organized by the APA Council on Global Psychiatry and the WPA Conflict Management & Resolution Section, in collaboration with the WPA Disaster Psychiatry and Occupational Psychiatry Sections, WHO, and CDC in Atlanta.

World Psychiatric Association's Congress Update
Eliot Sorel, M.D., D.F.A.P.A., Clinical Professor of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences in the School of Medicine and of Global Health, Health Services Management and Leadership in the School of Public Health participated in the World Psychiatric Association's Congress in Florence, Italy, November 10-12, 2004. He chaired the symposia on Stress, Depression and Cardiac Events, Access to Mental Health Care Impediments : African, American and European Perspectives and launched the book he edited 21st Century Romanian Psychiatry done collaboratively with Romanian colleagues, Professor Ahmed Okasha, President WPA and Professor Mario Maj, Secretary for Publications, WPA.

XVIII World Congress of Social Psychiatry Update
Eliot Sorel, M.D., D.F.A.P.A., Clinical Professor of Global Health in the School of Public Health and of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences in the School of Medicine recently chaired the Ethics in Medicine, Psychiatric Medicine and Public Health symposium at the XVIII World Congress of Social Psychiatry, Globalization and Diversity. As part of the symposium he presented Validity, Specificity and Reliability of Informed Consent. Additionally he was part of the Kobe Declaration work group, a historic document addressed to all UN members states and unanimously adopted by the World Association for Social Psychiatry, the World Psychiatric Association, the World Association for Psychosocial Rehabilitation, the World Federation for Mental Health, and the Japanese Society for Social Psychiatry, on October 26, 2004.

Maryland's Emergency Petition Statute Broadened
Maryland's EP statute now allows police to bring a person to emergency room if individual presents a danger to the life or safety of the individual or of others. This changes the prior statute which required imminent dangerousness. Click here for entire article.
