Frequently Asked Questions
Why Should I Join?
The Washington Psychiatric Society (WPS) is your professional
association in the metropolitan Washington region. Membership
provides you with collegiality, a base of consultants and
a community of your peers.
Since WPS members must also be members of the American Psychiatric Association (APA), they enjoy the APA benefits as well. Go to the Join APA webpage to learn more about these benefits
You’ll also benefit from our scientific program and
other educational and social events, most offered free of
charge as a benefit of WPS membership.
Keep up to date on current clinical, legislative, scientific
information through free member publications including The
American Journal of Psychiatry, Psychiatric News, Washington
Psychiatric Society News and the WPS members-only list serv,
WPSNET.
WPS is your voice in Annapolis, the District and Richmond.
We provide a strong lobbying and legislative presence in the
state and District arenas. Major successes in recent days
include defeat of non-physician prescribing legislation in
Maryland, passage of the patients’ bill of rights in
Virginia and advocacy for the physicians’ joint negotiations
bill in the District of Columbia.
WPS is the psychiatric community’s voice in community
and patient service as well. Members have opportunities to
take part in the District’s Jail Diversion Coalition
and End-of-Life Quality Care Coalition.
If you have a flair for public relations, legal and legislative
issues, information technology, quality assurance and a host
of other interests, there’s a place for you in WPS to
use your talents and meet colleagues who share your interests.
